The examination

MDT (Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy) begins with gathering a detailed history relating to your symptoms and how they behave throughout the day. The patient will then be asked to perform specific movements and maintain static positions.

The main distinguishing feature of MDT is the use of repeated movements as opposed to performing a single movement. How symptoms and mobility change as a result of performing repeated movements provides the specialist with information to form a diagnosis and determine the appropriate course of action.

Initial diagnosis

In each diagnosis, a specific procedure tailored to the characteristics of the condition is used. In therapy, mechanical treatment procedures such as repeated therapeutic movement, manual procedures, and correction of posture and movement habits are used.

MDT is a comprehensive classification system and only a small group of patients do not fit into the basic clinical groups, but fit into the picture of Other Clinical Diagnoses, such as serious pathologies, non-mechanical causes of origin, chronic pain syndrome, etc.

Therapy

Based on the information obtained during the examination, the specialist will prescribe specific therapeutic movements and determine the correct posture to adopt, as well as which activities to avoid in order to facilitate the healing processes. If the condition requires a more thorough analysis due to the complexity of the clinical presentation, a qualified therapist may use manual techniques to enable self-healing.

The goal is to achieve the highest effectiveness in the shortest period of time and with the fewest number of visits possible. Therapeutic procedures that can be performed five or six times a day are more effective than treatment based on visits to the therapist two or three times a week. The main focus is on the patient, who should be active in the healing process. This approach reduces the number of visits, resulting in time and cost savings.

Ultimately, most patients are able to manage their problem independently when they have the necessary knowledge about their condition.

Preventing relapses

By gaining knowledge about the possibilities of self-management of the condition, the patient can minimize the risk of symptom recurrence. The patient is also able to independently manage symptoms in case of relapses, which allows for safe and effective self-treatment.
