MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING OF THE SPINE

Basic guidelines for performing magnetic resonance imaging.

The primary indication for undergoing magnetic resonance imaging is suspicion of pathological changes in the spinal canal and spinal cord. In such cases, compression of the spinal cord most commonly occurs, leading to prolonged and very intense pain, usually in the lumbosacral region, and may result in neurological changes.

CT surgical scanner.

Indications for performing a lumbar spine magnetic resonance imaging may also include diagnostic difficulties in cases of experiencing numbness in the lower limbs, loss of sensation in the toes, lack of sphincter control (urinary and fecal incontinence), and problems with smooth mobility.

The examination may be ordered to assess post-traumatic changes (especially when there is a risk of spinal cord and vertebrae damage), check the size of degenerative changes in the cervical spine, evaluate bone changes, as well as examine potential postoperative changes.
